Second grade students at Galm Elementary have been learning about fairy tales and how they differ from traditional fantasy through lessons in the library. Students viewed a United Streaming video of a fractured fairy tale based on The Three Little Pigs. They learned that a fractured fairy tale is one where changes have been made to characters, settings, or plots of traditional fairy tales. The students then created their own fractured fairy tale with help from using NetTrekker d.i., a district-wide online database.
Neff Middle School librarian, Kathy Lindley, provided a review of the online databases during a recent professional development day. After the instruction teachers worked with members of their department to develop ways to incorporate the databases in their instruction. Ceiling mounted LCD projectors were installed in every classroom at Neff during January 2009. These projectors will allow teachers to project database articles from their computer to the screen for whole-class viewing.
Fourth grade students at Burke Elementary used Gale and Worldbook Online databases for a research project. They researched the Kemp Ridley Sea Turtles and wrote information on note cards. Students will use their newly gained knowledge as they create projects about the sea turtles.
Melissa Dockery’s fifth grade class at Michael Elementary discovered that the online encyclopedias World Book and Britannica were great sources of information for their projects about issues, events, and famous people of the Civil War.
