Fifth grade students at Blattman Elementary are hard at work discovering information about trees.
Using databases such as United Streaming, World Book Online, and Ebsco Kids Search, students researched dendrochronolgy, then applied what they learned by measuring the height and girth of trees found in the campus courtyard. They used magnifying glasses to count tree rings.
This lesson was a collaboration between the Librarian, Mrs. Villarreal, the CIT, Ms. Torres and the fifth grade Science teachers, Mrs. Weatherford, and Mrs. Alvarez.
At Mary Burns Michael Elementary, second and third grade researchers are using World Book Kids to find information for Social Studies and Science projects. Second Graders are studying the history of Thanksgiving, and Third Graders are learning about simple machines.
Fifth grade students were busy in the Villarreal library and computer lab. Students used laptop computers to take notes from the print resources found in the library and then added to their fact finding by searching World Book Online and Encyclopedia Britannica. They worked in small groups to compile their research into a slide show presentation to present to other classes.
